typetown is a typing game made by Rounak (roncodes.in). This page explains what data the game uses and why. The short version: you can play without an account, we only keep what's needed for accounts and leaderboards, and we never sell your data.

what we collect

  • If you just play: nothing is stored about you on our servers. Your settings, personal bests, recent songs and favourites stay in your browser.
  • If you sign in: your email address (to send sign-in codes and identify your account), the username you choose, the scores of runs you finish (song, score, WPM, accuracy, grade, how long it took, date), how many runs you start, your favourite songs, and any reports you make about other players.
  • Technical data: like any website, our servers see your IP address and browser details with each request. We use the IP address briefly, in memory, to stop abuse (rate limiting) and don't store it.

what's public

Your username, picture and scores appear on song leaderboards, a finished run gets a page you can share, and every player has a profile page at /u/your-username showing those scores and the stats built from them - runs, time typing, best and average speed, and when you played. Anyone with the link can see it. Your email address is never shown anywhere.

cookies and storage on your device

  • Sign-in cookies (set by Clerk, our sign-in provider) keep you signed in. They're only used for signing in and are essential for accounts to work.
  • Local storage in your browser keeps your settings, theme, personal bests, favourites, sync offsets and, for up to an hour, a score from a run you finished while signed out, so it can be saved once you sign in.
  • YouTube: song audio plays through YouTube's embedded player in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). YouTube may store data on your device once a video plays.
  • Your runs are checked on our server to keep leaderboards fair, using a short-lived signed token per run - no extra personal data.
  • We don't use analytics or advertising cookies of our own. If we show ads, we'll ask for your consent first where the law requires it, and update this page.

services we use

  • YouTube API Services find and play song audio. By playing a song you're also using YouTube, under the YouTube Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. We don't connect to your Google or YouTube account; you can review app access any time at Google security settings.
  • Clerk (clerk.com) handles sign-in: it stores your email address, sends your sign-in codes, and checks for bots (using Cloudflare Turnstile).
  • Neon (neon.tech) hosts our database: usernames, emails, scores and favourites.
  • Apple (iTunes Search API) provides song charts, search, artwork and 30-second previews, which load from Apple's servers.
  • lrclib.net provides synced lyrics. Our server looks them up; your details aren't sent.
  • Our hosting provider serves the site and may keep standard server logs.

We share data with these services only so the game works. We don't sell or rent personal data.

how long we keep it

Account data is kept until you delete your account. Deleting it removes your profile, scores and favourites from our database and your login from Clerk straight away. Data in your browser stays until you clear it.

your choices and rights

  • Play without an account - nothing about you is stored on our servers.
  • Change your username, or delete your account and all its data, from your profile.
  • Ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or to correct it, by emailing [email protected]. Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK, California or India) you may have further rights, such as to object to processing or to complain to your data protection authority.

children

typetown is not meant for children under 13, and they shouldn't create an account. If you believe a child has given us their details, contact us and we'll delete them.

security

Connections are encrypted (HTTPS), sign-in uses one-time codes rather than passwords, and only you can change or delete your account. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we store to a minimum.
